What is a consumer price index (CPI)?
ASU economist explains the difference between headline inflation, which includes all prices, and core inflation, which excludes food and energy.

Headline inflation measures the rate of change of the general price level, including commodities such as food and energy prices. Core inflation based on the core CPI measures the general price level for consumer goods, excluding food and energy prices, which tend to be highly volatile.
