New faculty: Research and industry experience

Three new faculty members joining the Department of Information Systems this fall bring research strength in online markets and the economics of information technology as well as broad experience in industry.

Assistant Professor Sang-Pil Han, coming from the College of Business at City University of Hong Kong, explores the economics of information technology.

Assistant Professor Yili (Kevin) Hong recently completed his Ph.D. in information systems at the Fox School of Business at Temple University. His dissertation focused on various issues in the emerging online labor markets.

Lecturer Alan Simon is a prolific author and has had a successful consulting career as well as teaching at several universities.

Sang-Pil Han

Sang-Pil Han received his education in industrial management and management engineering at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. He completed post-doctoral research at the Stern School of Business at New York University and interned at AT&T Labs Research in New Jersey. He explains that his research explores the economics of technology, such as the economic value of mobile technologies and applications, the business impact of digital and mobile marketing and the economic impact of the business analytics.

Yili (Kevin) Hong

Yili (Kevin) Hong graduated magna cum laude from Beijing Foreign Studies University (China) with a B.S. in management and a B.A. in English literature in 2009. He holds a Ph.D. in information systems from the Fox School of Business at Temple University. Kevin's research focuses on economic and behavioral issues in online labor markets, product uncertainty and social media. Hong said that he chose W. P. Carey because of the school’s reputation, particularly in the IS field. He’s also excited to be working in a department whose culture is collegial and supportive. In addition his research interests align with the research of several current faculty members.

Alan Simon

Alan Simon was an Air Force ROTC scholarship cadet at ASU in the late 1970’s and became an officer upon graduation. After his active duty commitment was complete he went to work for Digital Equipment Corporation — at the time the second largest computer manufacturer in the world. Subsequently he built a career in consulting and managing/leading consulting practices. He has taught as an adjunct instructor at a number of universities. He’s also a prolific writer. His new book on modern enterprise data management architecture and road map strategies, "Understanding the New SQL, A Complete Guide," will be published this fall by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers. A companion book about best practices for managing enterprise-level business intelligence and data warehouse programs will also be published by MKP early next year.
